Let us look at Tip No. 1 as follows:
Tip No. 1: Filter Tap Water at home
New York City drinking water is world-renowned for its quality. Each day, more than 1 billion gallons of fresh, clean
water is delivered from large upstate reservoirs—some more than 125 miles from the City—to the taps of nine million customers throughout New York state.
However, during its journey through miles and miles of pipes before reaching our taps, despite the cleanliness of its source, water gets contaminated with multiple contaminants that we don’t want in our drinking water. Examples of these contaminants are lead, chlorine, fluoride, pesticides, mercury, just to name a few.
These contaminants and toxins can lead to complications in our health when consumed every day and on a long term as they get built up in our bodies(Refer to my post on Healthy Lifestyle Tip No. 5). Examples of these complications or illnesses include joint arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, autism in children, weight gain, just to name a few. While the Environmental Protection Agency regulates municipal tap water and sets legal limits on certain contaminants, and most water utilities generally stay within these limits, “some of the legal limits may be too lenient,” said Paul Pestano, a research analyst with the Environmental Working Group.
Introduction to Water, its importance and why filter your tap water
Water is essential to life. About 70% of the human body is water. It has many functions, some of which include lubricating the joints, flushing waste and toxins from the body via urine, being the primary component of saliva which is used for digesting carbohydrates and aids in swallowing foods. Since water is so important to our human body, we don’t want contaminants in our drinking water. It is thus important to filter our tap water to reduce the contaminants found in it.
Get a copy of your tap water quality
But water contaminants and water quality vary from one local water utility to another, so you want to purchase a filter that is effective at capturing the right contaminants.
You can request a copy of your water utility’s annual water quality report – called a right-to-know or consumer confidence report — to find out which contaminants in your local water are of concern.
You may also wish to do your own testing of your tap water. There are water analysis kit which you can purchase from Amazon at fraction of a cost and time compared to getting lab test for each element. I like this inexpensive one from Amazon called:“Drinking Water Test Kit For Municipal Tap and Well Water – Simple Testing Strips For Lead Copper Bacteria, Nitrates, Chlorine and More“ (refer to my page on Holiday Shopping & Organic Foods for details). I bought one to test my tap water which smelled strongly of chlorine. After installing water filter, a second test produced negative results for chlorine and other contaminants.
Choosing your filter
After knowing which contaminants are in your local water, you can then choose a filter that is certified by NSF International, an independent public health organization that assesses products.
You can look into these suggestions for your home water filter.
